Paul holds a bachelor’s degree in music performance from Eastern Washington University, a Master’s degree in music from Northwestern University and studied African drumming with Babatunde Olatunji. In 1974, Paul joined the Spokane Symphony as a section percussionist and became Principal Percussion in 1986.
In addition to his duties with the Spokane Symphony, Paul also performs with several other musical groups in the area including Moko Jumbie, Clarion Brass, and Desafinado, and regularly plays in pit orchestras for touring musicals such as Wicked, Beautiful, Anything Goes, High School Musical, Ragtime, and Newsies, among others. Besides teaching at Holy Names, he is also a music faculty member at Whitworth University and Spokane Falls Community College
