Thomas Hampson, Baritone
Hailed by audiences and critics alike, Thomas Hampson, baritone, possesses one of today’s most beautiful voices. Raised in Spokane, Washington, Thomas Hampson studied with Sr. Marietta Coyle at HOLY NAMES MUSIC CENTER, Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, Martial Singher and Horst Gunther. Renowned for his versatility, Hampson performs in all genres, from operas to musicals, oratorios to recitals. He has also made significant achievements in the fields of recording, research and pedagogy.
Thomas Hampson has sung the title roles in Rossini’s Guillaume Tell, Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, Massenet’s Werther in the original baritone version, Verdi’s Macbeth and Simon Boccanegra, Mozart’s Don Giovanni, as well as the world premiere of Cerha’s Der Riese vom Steinfeld. In recital, he is particularly known for his interpretation of the Mahler and Wolf song repertoire.
Mr. Hampson has received honors and titles from many international institutions. He has also achieved an award from the National Arts Club of America for his achievements in the fields of music and education. His recordings have received many awards including six Grammy nominations, two Prix du Disque and three Gramophone Awards, among many others. He was EMI-Artist of the Year in 1997. His recording of Tannhäuser received the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording. In addition to his long-time collaboration with EMI, Thomas Hampson has recorded for all the major labels.
