Supporting Musical Growth
At the heart of the Talent Grant is a commitment to nurturing talent. Each year, Holy Names Music Center awards $500 to students awarded first place and $100 to students awarded second place. These awards are scholarships provided toward tuition for the upcoming instructional year, helping students continue their studies with expert faculty at the Music Center. While the financial support is valuable, the recognition itself carries even greater significance—it affirms a student’s artistry, discipline, and potential.
The grant is awarded to up to four students of any age, selected across four categories:
Piano
Strings
Voice
Other instruments (including woodwinds, brass, percussion, harp, and guitar)
In some cases, awards may be flexibly reassigned across categories if exceptional talent is identified.
A Rigorous and Thoughtful Selection Process
The Talent Grant is not simply awarded—it is earned through a carefully designed process that emphasizes fairness, musical integrity, and artistic excellence.
Students must participate in a private audition evaluated by an independent adjudicator, ensuring an unbiased and professional assessment.
Auditions are structured to reflect real-world performance expectations:
A maximum of 10 minutes of performance time
Typically two contrasting pieces, or one extended work for advanced performers
Optional memorization, depending on instructor guidance
A private setting, with no audience present
Performers must present their music thoughtfully, including announcing their selections as they would in a formal recital
Importantly, adjudicators evaluate performers anonymously, receiving only essential details such as age, years of study, and repertoire—focusing purely on the music itself.
More Than an Award
Beyond the audition and selection process, the Talent Grant represents something deeper. It reflects the Music Center’s long-standing mission: “A Tradition of Quality Music Instruction for All.”
Recipients are recognized not only for their performance in a single audition, but for the consistent dedication, discipline, and growth they bring to their studies. As reflected in the official award communication, the grant is both a celebration of achievement and an encouragement for continued artistic development .
Encouraging the Next Generation of Musicians
The Talent Grant Awards also serve as an inspiring milestone for all students. Whether nominated or not, the process encourages goal-setting, performance preparation, and artistic exploration—skills that extend far beyond the audition room.
With applications due in May and auditions held in McNally Recital Hall, the annual cycle of this program brings together students, faculty, and adjudicators in a shared commitment to musical excellence.
